Hardcore, More Than Music!
…Animal, earth and human liberation will only come through education… (Chokehold)

Indeed, hardcore is more than just music! We’ve once again put together a series of non-musical activities to feed the minds of the politically, socially and ethically active people and to educate those who are oblivious to the matter. Check it out from time to time, feed your head, feel free to discuss,… We can all learn from each other!

Be sure to visit the Oxfam Fairtrade Bar and Vegan Snackshop in the MoreThanMusic tent!

Check the message board in front of the MTM-Stage for a daily update. (Very) subject to change.

Meeting DeWereldMorgen / MTMcinema

Alternative Media Coverage by DeWereldMorgen.be
Ieperfest will be covered by a group of independent journalists/media activists from the alternative media collective called DeWereldMorgen (TheWorldTomorrow). In a society where traditional media tend to commercialize and avoid social coverage, DeWereldMorgen is an independent organisation that brings daily and reliable news on what’s going (wr)on(g) in our society. By not accepting commercialization for what it is (unbridled capitalism / the root of all evil), DeWereldMorgen can concentrate on what’s really important, on what you should know about this complex world we are all living in. It's a free news website based on the work of volunteers who publish their own news about activism and social movements.
On Ieperfest they will be working as a team, meeting every morning at 11h. to discuss and divide the work, and to publish their pictures and articles of the festival on www.dewereldmorgen.be
And you can join them! If you’d also like to do a report on Ieperfest through your pictures, video, interviews,… and get your stuff posted on DeWereldMorgen.be: great! Meet us at the MTM-stage at 11h. or contact “ // ”.
More info and contacts on www.dewereldmorgen.be and last year’s report: http://www.dewereldmorgen.be/tags/ieperfest2010

DeWereldMorgen is very keen on doing live interviews with bands/people performing on Ieperfest and to discuss some of the topics presented in the MoreThanMusic-tent. Do join us if you feel like you can contribute!
You’re very welcome.

MTMcinema
Ranging from animal and human rights films to documentary films about ecology, social movements, action groups and even some rare footage of underground gigs from all over the world, this might turn out to be quite the cinematic experience – hence MTMcinema.

13h.> Oxfam Presentation / Aaron Duyck

We sure hope Oxfam Fairtrade needs no introduction and we are very pleased to have Aaron Duyck at IEPERFEST to answer all the questions you might still have. Why Fairtrade? Where do profits go to? And is it “green” to import products from the South?
The Ieperfest-crew already knows the answers as we totally support their efforts and we’d like to share our knowledge. Welcome!

The Black Fish Presentation

The Black Fish is a European based marine conservation organisation that takes action on the issues of whaling, industrial fishing and marine animals in captivity. Using education, investigation and non-violent direct action, The Black Fish has set out on a mission to change attitudes towards our precious oceans and to work towards protecting the unique life within them.

21h.> Film/Documentary Shock Doctrine

Shock Doctrine, The Rise of Disaster Capitalism (Mat Whitecross, Michael Winterbottom, 79 min.)
In THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, Naomi Klein explodes the myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America’s “free market” policies have come to dominate the world-- through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

13h.> Sea the Truth / Dos Winkel / Sea First Foundation

Sea the Truth – in 2048 the oceans will be empty (Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation, 60 min.)
The state of our oceans and seas is the main focus in “Sea the Truth”. Leading scientists such as Daniel Pauly suggest that if we continue to catch and eat fish at the current rate, the oceans and seas will be empty within 40 years. The hunt for fish is an economic monster on the run: large bottom trawlers are scraping the bottoms of the seas empty, taking with them all living things with destructive force. The massive amount of bycatch is thrown back into the sea, usually dead.

Two young marine biologists Marianne van Mierlo and Barbara van Genne, are searching worldwide for scientific information about the condition of our biggest ecosystems, which cover more than two thirds of our planet. Underwater photographer and ocean conservationist Dos Winkel shows them the beauty of marine life and the enormous threats to which it is exposed. For the documentary the producers filmed in Newfoundland, on Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles), on the North Sea, the Azores and at various locations in the Netherlands. Authorities offer the solution of sustainable fisheries projects while leading scientists say that every fish that is taken now, is one too many. This documentary shows that, unfortunately, there is no such thing as “sustainable fishing”.
Introduced by Dos Winkel. Film in english, subtitles in dutch
More info: www.seathetruth.nl

Followed by a presentation about the Sea First Foundation
If you can find the time to check this presentation out and hear Dos Winkel talk about the oceans, please do so! As he can talk very enthusiasticly about it and he will open your eyes… for sure.
Let’s face it, within 40 years our oceans and seas will be empty unless we act now.

Film/Documentary LoveMEATender

LoveMEATender (Manu Coeman, 63 min.)
THE WORLD OF MEAT AS IT HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE
LoveMEATender questions the place of meat in our lives and the crazy surge that has made it a product “like any other”, subject to the rule of the lowest possible price. In 2050, there will be approximately 9 billion individuals on Earth and to supply us with meat will require 36 billion head of livestock. Is it reasonable to continue to think that every person can eat meat every day?
The exhaustion of natural resources, pollution, global warming; the earth is already paying the price for overproduction... The consequences for the human body are also manifold, from obesity to cancers, diabetes, heart disease and resistance to antibiotics. As for the animals, the main subjects, lowered to the rank of machines, they are no longer part of our world, even less so of our imagination. This film is addressed to all audiences and raises life to the very heart of our plates thanks to a combination of filmed images, the destiny of a wonderful character, the Breton André Pochon, the use of animation, and music specially composed for the film by the singer Kris Dane. How did meat become commonplace in our plates?

21h.> Film/Documentary Orange County Hardcore Scenester

Orange County Hardcore Scenester (Evan Jacobs, 107 min.)
Covering the Orange County, CA hardcore/punk music scene from 1990 to 1997, Orange County Hardcore Scenester follows one man as he navigates a DIY music scene that soon finds itself the apple of many a major label’s eye. This Forrest Gump-like look at the Orange County hardcore scene features rare footage of bands such as: Rage Against the Machine, The Offspring, Farside, Outspoken, Gameface, A Chorus of Disapproval, Texas is the Reason, Quicksand and many more.
Don’t miss out on the first words of Zack de la Rocha in this documentary: “I see so much focus on music these days, and not on the words being said…” which pretty much sums up the whole MoreThanMusic set-up.
“I got involved in the Orange County, California hardcore scene in 1990 by accident. My brother wanted me to go to this show at the Reseda Country Club. The bill was Judge, Carry Nation, Walk Proud and Farside. There may have been another band… Quicksand might have even been scheduled to play… that was 21 years ago now so it's hard to remember.
Anyway, I went to that show and I kept going to shows. Even now, while sporadic, I still go to shows. However, the majority of my friends from the height of my show going days are still the people I spend the majority of my free time with. That to me is what's most important about this unique scene. My major involvement with hardcore was from 1990-1997. That is the time period that is chronicled in the documentary ORANGE COUNTY HARDCORE SCENESTER.
The reason for making this film isn't to say one period of music was better or more important than another. Rather, I think my friends did some stuff, musically or otherwise, that was important and special. And because these people are my friends that's why I wanted to make this film. I hope you enjoy this clip and I hope that makes you want to see the full film (it is completed!) which should be screening somewhere near you, in some way, very soon.”

13h.> Green IEPERFEST, the presentation

If all goes well, if we find the time and extreme weather conditions do not call for extreme measures, the Ieperfest-crew invites you to a presentation on “green” IEPERFEST.
IEPERFEST is known as a quality festival, organised by 2 Belgian not-for-profit organisations, which share both their geographical background and ideology: Republyk Vort’n Vis & Genet Records. We keep our ecological footprint as small as possible and we strongly support fairtrade. These values are an inherent part of the festival and are therefore (in)directly communicated to you, the public.
To satisfy the hunger of both the public and the artists, Ieperfest has chosen since day one to have an entirely vegan kitchen. An environmentally friendly, healthy and animal friendly choice to which we stay loyal.
These values didn’t escape the ‘outside world’, and this is clear from the fact that IEPERFEST stood on the highest stage for the first GREENEVENT AWARD 2010. This prize is handed out by OVAM (the Public Flemish Waste Management Company) to the greenest event in Flanders. This award was handed to us personally by the Flemish Minister of Environment, Nature & Culture, Joke Schauvliege.
What made us win the greenevent award last year? What are we doing exactly?
What can you do as organizers of a festival or as individuals? Questions&Answers. Tips&Tricks.
Feel free to comment, to express your thoughts on IEPERFEST or to voice your ideas. You’re very welcome!

Zoli(Ignite)/Josh(ToKill)/Sea Shepherd Presentation / videofootage

Sea Shepherd's Mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Even with the laws in place to protect our oceans, the rape and pillage of the seas continues as governments look the other way. It takes a pirate to catch a pirate, and that's why President and Founder Captain Paul Watson declares, "We are pirates of compassion in pursuit of pirates of profit and greed."

Zoli (Ignite) and Josh (ToKill) might put their shoulders under this presentation as the need for your help and support towards Sea Shepherd has never been any greater. When this booklet was printed, Captain Paul Watson posted the following on the Sea Shepherd website: “On the afternoon of Friday, July 15, the Steve Irwin was detained in the Scottish Shetland Islands by the British courts due to a civil lawsuit brought against us by Maltese fishing company, Fish and Fish Limited. They are claiming damages for the bluefin tuna we rescued from their nets in June 2010, fish that we believe were illegally caught after the season has closed, without an inspector onboard, or any paperwork documenting the legality of their catch. We have a legal firm representing us, and believe we have the necessary evidence to support our case. This lawsuit will also give us the opportunity to expose what we allege to be illegal activities by Fish and Fish and we will be aggressively defending the case on this basis. The protection of the endangered bluefin is vitally important to our oceans, and to humanity, because if the oceans die…we die.
Now, unless we post a bond for USD$1,411,692.87, the Steve Irwin will be held indefinitely and possibly sold. This would not only be a financial hardship for Sea Shepherd, but more importantly, it could prevent us from reaching the Faeroe Islands to protect pilot whales and threaten our ability to defend whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary from the Japanese whaling fleet this December. I urge you to help Save Our Ship today! We must urgently raise USD$1,411,692.87 to post bond. Gifts are coming in, but we have a long way to go. I urge you to send the largest gift you can today – your gift is incredibly important and will make a difference by helping us save the lives of endangered whales…”

Bookfair / NGO-stands
We believe that animal, earth and human liberation will only come through education, so Independent editors and distributors, Zines, NGO's and Action groups from around the world are more than welcome to set up a stand near the MoreThanMusic-stage. We also invite NGO’s and Action Groups to mount the stage and to educate the masses.

This is the place to be for critical, counter-current books and publications, vegan and sweatshop free clothing & accessories, cool stickers, posters, and what not… This stuff is hard to find in mainstream bookstores and shops. Copyleft not Copyright!

We are very honoured to have the following stands (and more) on Ieperfest:

Anarchistisch Kollektief Ghent - www.anarchistischkollektief.wordpress.com
The AK Ghent arose somewhere in the early 80's as a successor to the RAK (the Revolutionary Anarchist Collective) that was founded in 1977 at the Ghent University. Since then, it has continued its work at the university (and beyond) with ups and downs.
“As a student organization, we are affiliated with the political and philosophical convent within the University of Ghent, but our work is not limited to students and is open to anyone who can be found in the anarchist ideas. We focus as a group in daily practice on the collective struggle of people. We try to do this through direct action, discussions, info evenings, demonstrations, etc ... Our goal is to put into practice the anarchist ideas with the aim of spreading them and achieving an anti-authoritarian society without oppression and exploitation.
The AK collective is organized in a non-hierarchical way. All decisions regarding the collective are taken at AK meetings where everyone has equal say. We aim at making decisions by reaching consensus and during the meetings we discuss action plans, ideas and the continued operation of the AK. As an Anarchist Collective, we want people involved to take action and to develop ideas for themselves as much as possible.
The AK is open to cooperation with other basic groups, to reach a common goal and to set up a healthy discussion. The end, however, doesn’t justify the means, so therefore we won’t cooperate with people or groups that are capitalist, sexist, racist or have other authoritarian ideas. Long live Anarchy! “ IEPERFEST strongly advises you to check their info out…

Bite Back
- www.biteback.be + Palestina solidariteit
Since 2003, Bite Back is striving for the animals and their rights via nonviolent action. Their goal is to campaign for the rights, the needs, the welfare and the vital interests of animals by nonviolent action, especially in Belgium and The Netherlands. This non profit organisation assumes that animals have a value on its own whatever the possible usefulness for humans. Animals are living beings who are able to experience feelings just like human beings. They also support the vegetarian / vegan lifestyle and try to inform the people as much as possible by giving the right and independent information. Visit the information stand on this festival and get informed!

Blokbuster - www.blokbuster.be

Comac - http://chengetheworld.org
Comac is an active and revolutionary youth movement.

Comac unites all youth, high school and college students, who don't accept the current society. Youth that doesn't accept wars for oil or hard cash. Youth that wants a more just society, a society that answers to the needs of the peoples and not to those of the profit. Comac wants to gather all youth who refuse the racist, nationalist and fascist logics of the far right.
Comac, that's debating, that's exchange, discussion, willingness to listen, ... Comac is learning from one another to be able to progress together. Comac, that's the instrument to learn to understand the world (studies, educaction, debates, ...) Comac, that's also action: protests, workshops, actions, cultural activities, fundraising, travels, etc.
Comac it's a certain vision which is well reflected by our slogan CHEnge the world!
Another world is not only possible... it's necessary
In our society only the search for more profits of a couple of hundreds of capitalists that determines the policies of today. the needs of the peoples aren't being heard. The solution is logic: the planet and all it's resources (big entreprises, scientific knowledge, ...) have to be seen as common property. This, to be able to give the billions of workers and peasants the right to profit from their work and their efforts. This solution isn't only possible, but from a vital importance. It's necessary for survival, for dignity and for the cultural development of the peoples.
In this logic of profit, the youth is the vicitim: highering of the costs of studying, of going out, more pressure on the job (if you find one!), the witchhunt on the unemployed, troubles in the active life, young soldiers leaving to the front, ...

Peta2 - www.peta2.com
What's peta2?
We are an animal rights group that takes on anyone who abuses animals. From schools that don't allow the choice not to dissect to fashion designers who won't drop fur to fast-food giants that refuse to treat their animals right—if cruelty to animals is taking place, you can bet peta2 will be on it.

SFF has no profit intention.Oceans absorb more than 50% of all (man made) carbon dioxide and produce more than 70% of all the oxygen that we breath.
Many people that live on the Oceans shores are dependant for their income and livelihood on what the Ocean produces. SFF wants to achieve, by education and sharing of information to:
- Stop polluting the Oceans
- Reduce Climate Change
- Improve animal well being (fish and other sea animals welfare)
- Stop overfishing and destructive fisheries

Wilde Aarde / Groen Front / Earth First
http://www.direkte-aktie.net/wildeaarde/ http://www.groenfront.nl/

Groenfront! is a name you can use for environmental direct action. The idea was born during the counter climate summit in Berlin in 1995, where Dutch activists met English earth first! activists from who they learned of the tactics being used in the U.K such as direct action, occupations, action camps, and of course sabotage. Which occasionally succeeded in stopping environmentally destructive projects. This was very different (and inspiring) for the Dutch activists. Who were more familiar with moderate lobbying, and the occasional “fluffy” action to get press coverage.

Shortly after, Groenfront, the Dutch name for Earth first! was established. With (among other actions) a campaign against the destruction of a beautiful nature reserve at the Ruigoord. and against the construction of the betuwelijn, a train line between Betuwe van Elst and Dordrect, and protecting different forests around the Netherlands and Belgium.

What kind of organistation is Groenfront!?
GF! is not an organisation. According to the BVD (the old Dutch internal security forces) 1998 yearly report ” GF! is a ‘nom de guerre’ or a battle cry, being used by radical environmentalists from a large mix different groups and people.
GroenFront! / Earth First! is a convenient name to use for your non-violent direct action. With GF! / EF! a network of radical nature lovers and anarchist eco saboteurs are working hard fighting against the destruction of the planet.

People involved in GroenFront! (Earth First!) are very keen on talking about their campaigns, so keep an eye out for this! Do join us if you feel like you can contribute! You’re very welcome.

Oxfam Fairtrade Bar
Do we really need to introduce Oxfam Fairtrade to you? We hope not, but here goes:
Oxfam Fairtrade is a wholesaler in fair trade food products.
At the current market price, farmers selling their coffee, cacao and sugar do not get sufficient income. Oxfam Fairtrade is fighting against this unfair situation.
Oxfam Fairtrade buys products from organised small or medium-sized producer organisations in the South, paying them a fair price. This fair price is often higher than the current market price and ensures a decent income for the producers .
By collaborating with Oxfam the producer can invest in:
* better agricultural techniques
* product development
* training and education
* health care
* housing
* infrastructure
Oxfam Fairtrade works only with approved producer organisations that are monitored by the non-profit organisation Oxfam-Wereldwinkels.

Apart from a medium-sized Oxfam Bar where you’ll find all the Oxfam-liquids (fruitjuice, biocola, bio-ice tea, bio-lemonade, wines and stronger beers) , a wide range of (vegan) Oxfam products will also be available at a fair price in the MoreThanMusic-Tent, you lucky bastards!

Vegan Snackshop
Ow yes, just like last year, but now even bigger! Go check it out! (and say hi to Barb & Sam;)

Organic Meltdown Chocolate saves trees.
Unlike the fabled Willy Wonka, who offered the world a golden ticket to see his magical chocolate factory, Organic Meltdown's Swiss chocolate is so eco-friendly and so morally-sound, it makes our bars the true "golden ticket" for your own guaranteed ring-side seat in the fight against climate change, and making our world a better place to live. We want organic and Fair-trade chocolate to be more than just a product. Chocolate needs to reflect the rich natural diversity of the tropical forests in the foothills of the Andes Mountains where cocoa beans were first discovered many millennia ago. These forests, the ancestral home of cacao, are threatened with extinction and Organic Meltdown chocolate is the only product of any type to save a living, breathing tropical forest tree for every bar of chocolate we sell.
Ieperfest supports this campaign. In the MTM-tent you'll find some delicious (vegan) chocolate bars. When you buy one bar, you'll save one tree, and you'll take part in the Ieperfest Forest Project!
Some say all we need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt! To all the chocolate lovers out there, pick up a bar and help to save the environment in a very easy and tasty way!

See how many trees Ieperfest has saved already on: www.organicmeltdown.com , and help out!

Ieperfest Zine Library
A decent collection of Zines from around the world. There will be a really cozy reading room near the MTM-stage (thanks to Kringloopwinkel West*). Feel free to read’em here, but put’em back, thanks! We kindly ask everyone who makes musical or pure political zines to bring 2 copies to the tent right next to the distro tent (the MTM-stage). Your zine will be available for everyone to read for the duration of the festival and then taken up into the Ieperfest Zine Library for future editions. A great chance for you to spread the DIY ethics and ideas of our movement and to present your work. If you would like to keep feeding the Ieperfest Zine Library with your zine, please contact us at ‘xpositiveheartxATtelenet.be’ or send them to Ieperfest Zine Library, Postbus 42- 8900 Ieper/Belgium

Vort’n Vis Benefit

You just can’t kill the Vort’n Vis… however…

This is an open letter to everyone who was ever involved in the Vort’n Vis, performed on stage, came to the shows, visited the place or simply sympathises with the general idea that people can achieve great things and work for a positive change in this world if they can only find the right tools…

So we’ve been running an autonomous DIY venue for more than 22 years now. A place for people from different nationalities to meet and share ideas for a better world through music, art, workshops and conversation. In 2001 we’ve managed to buy an old building, but after 10 years of intense use, our space needs serious renovation and rebuilding! Basically, we need money (fast and lots of it), otherwise this might as well be the end of the Vort’n Vis as we know it today.

We’re setting up a bunch of benefits ourselves and we‘re working very hard to make things happen, but we sure as hell can use your help! Feel free to get in touch if you have any ideas on how to help out,

if you would like to organize a benefit yourself, if you would like to donate some money or to show your support. All info should be online on our humble website soonish.

There’s also a collecting box in the MoreThanMusic tent. If everyone here at IEPERFEST could donate a few or even more euro’s, this would just be an immense help and a great way to secure the future of the Vort’n Vis!

Now, more than ever, we understand the importance of places like the Vort’n Vis for total liberation & solidarity worldwide and we can only hope you feel the same way.
